I moved to Kagoshima, Japan in January and this painting is based on a shrine found on the slopes of Sakurajima, Japan’s most active volcano. This shrine has a torii gate that is almost completely buried in the ground and it is all that remains of a village that was sadly buried by volcanic rock in the last major eruption of 1914. The shrine is beautiful but sombre and whenever i visit, i often see little wild boar foraging around the lanterns.
